The Heron

This post will let you make a rubbing of a very large bird. You are quite likely to see one standing in the river while you are in Coulson Park.

Herons are very large, long-necked birds and often reach almost one metre in height. They are grey-white in colour and feed on fish while standing in shallow water. They are omnivorous, and will also eat small mammals and birds: they will sometimes search the fields for small rodents. Their search for fish can lead them into gardens that have ornamental fish ponds containing goldfish and koi.

Herons nest close to water, but hide their nests among vegetation. The female typically lays 3 to 7 eggs.

The heron should be distinguished from the related egrets, which are white and generally smaller, and from the black cormorants and shags that are also found in shallow water.

I hope that you saw one of those impressive waterbirds. I often manage to beat them to the best fish! Lets move on to the final post in the trail.
